The president of Newton Piano first found his love in the violin. He started playing in the VA Symphony when he was 16 years old and continued for over 50 years. In the 1920's, Herbert Newton was taking lessons from a renowned violinist named I. E. Feldman. Born into a musical family, Herbert's mother was a professional organist and a pianist. Herbert began his journey with pianos when he realized that he disliked the way the technicians were tuning his piano. He mentioned this to his teacher, Feldman. Soon after that, Feldman went on a trip to New York and Philadelphia. When he returned, Herbert was astonished to see that Feldman had brought back, from the two cities, dozens of books about tuning, repairing and rebuilding pianos. The gifts were a piano technician's dream and Herbert was drawn into the field instantly. As he puts it, "I was hooked!". The yound violinist started tuning pianos all over the Eastern Seaboard. His love for the piano grew rapidly and at the age of 24, he opened the doors of Newton Piano on Market Street in Norfolk, Virginia.

Herbert Newton has been recognized as one of the nations leading piano technicians. In 1958 and 1959, he was named the national Brand Name Retailer of the Year. In the 1960's, he served as a liason between the National Association of Music Merchants and the market's piano manufacturers. In 1960, Herbert was elected to the Board of Directors of NAMM and the company is still a member of the association to this day.

Newton Piano Company has been on the streets of Market St., Monticello Ave., Granby St. and Wards Corner in Norfolk, Virginia. "The Store" was later located on Witchduck Road and also inside Pembroke Mall in Virginia Beach, Virginia. 

The Newton Family
